DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for Saturday\, April 27rd\, for the 9th annual Wilmore Coaster Car Derby on E. Main St. This fun event will entertain the entire family! In addition to watching the kids race side by side down E. Main. There will be a display of “Unique and Antique” vehicles to inspect between races\, along with all the shops being open\, and a food truck or two. The event is free to attend and to participate in provided the kids meet the testing qualifications and that there are enough available cars. DESCRIPTION:Join the National Park Service (NPS) for the 3rd Annual Winter Lecture Series at Camp Nelson National Monument! The special programs feature guest speakers who present on a variety of topic related to the Civil War Era. The presentations take place on select Saturdays at starting at 11:00 am at the park. The 1.5-hour programs are free and open to the public. \nJanuary 27\, 2024: Dr. Chuck Welsko\, Digital Documentary Editor\, Kentucky Historical Society\, “Rebellion\, Calamity\, and Woe: Governor Thomas E. Bramlette’s Unionism in War and Memory” \nThomas E. Bramlette became the 23rd Governor of Kentucky during the Civil War. A strong Unionist at the start of the conflict\, Bramlette served both as a colonel in the Union Army and a Federal District Judge before becoming defeating Charles Wickliffe for the governor’s office in August 1863. Almost immediately upon entering his official duties in Frankfort\, Bramlette encountered the challenges of leading a Border State with divided loyalties and priorities\, as well as an increasingly hard war waged by Federal authorities aimed at dismantling slavery across the South. A loyal slaveholding Unionist himself\, Bramlette’s wartime experiences reflect the earliest foundations of Kentucky’s wartime experience and post-war memory\, revealing how Kentuckians would grow disappointed and disillusioned with the consequences of the Civil War.

(Nov. 20\, 2023) — This year’s MLK Holiday Celebration will be Jan. 15\, 2024 beginning with the annual Freedom March at 1 p.m. and concluding with the powerful commemorative program held at the Central Bank Center at 2 p.m. The march begins and ends at the Central Bank Center in downtown Lexington. \n“This storied event has been praised by media commentators and several of our illustrious speakers as ‘one of the best in the country for its consistent record of presenting thoughtful\, timely and creatively uplifting programs\,’” said Chester Grundy\, MLK Day Event chairperson since 1974. “We look forward to celebrating with our community and invite everyone to come together on Jan. 15.” \nThe MLK Holiday Observance in Lexington provides an opportunity for our community to come together to honor Martin Luther King’s legacy of freedom\, justice\, peace and equal opportunity for all Americans. The annual march and program draws participation of several thousand people from across Central Kentucky and beyond. The MLK Holiday Observance is a free public event designed to inspire the better angels of our nature as we unite as a community to elevate King’s vision and legacy. The 2023 march had a record crowd of over 8\,000. \nThe program keynote speaker this year is Rev. Kevin W.
