Arbor Day this year is Friday, April 24. That week, a number of tree-related events are scheduled in Wilmore. The aim is to continue expanding Wilmore’s lush tree canopy so our city grows healthier, greener, and more delightful as days and years roll by.
Volunteers are needed to help with tree-planting, especially April 21 through 25. Various events are planned, some at Centennial Park and at Woodbreeze Park (the minipark by Woodspointe Way and Jessamine Station Road), and some on the property of Asbury Seminary and the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center. Some trees will be available for planting also on residential properties.
Students, adults, and children ten years and up (if accompanied by adults) are welcome to volunteer for two or three hours (depending on the day and planting schedule). [To help as a volunteer, or for more information, contact Amy Fitch, Director of Parks and Recreation (afitch@wilmore.org) or Howard Snyder, committee chair (has@wineskins.net).
The vision of Trees for Wilmore is long-term, and the focus is on a broad variety of native species, rather than non-native or invasive trees that do damage over time. We aim to plant more than 6,000 trees over the next six years—healthy, beautiful, nurturing trees that may in time grow taller than any of Wilmore’s existing buildings, and will likely outlast most of them. Some trees can continue growing healthily and nurturing the environment for 2,000 years and more, and everyone benefits.
The next regular meeting of Trees for Wilmore will be Thursday, May 28, at 4:00 pm at the Municipal Center. Visitors and new committee members are welcome. (The committee will not meet during April due to the tree-planting activities).
More information about Trees for Wilmore, including upcoming events and the Trees for Wilmore brochure, are available on the City of Wilmore website — https://wilmore.org/trees-for-wilmore/.

Wilmore Without Borders, our local immigrant aid group, is holding a fundraiser to benefit Neighbors Immigration Clinic (NIC) this Saturday night at Wilmore United Methodist Church. NIC is a non-profit law office in Lexington working tirelessly to protect vulnerable immigrants in Kentucky. All of the money raised by this event will go to NIC.
If you come, please plan to pay digitally or with checks. If you can’t come, you can still donate! I have attached QR codes for PayPal and Venmo to this email. Please put “WWoB” as a memo with your payment, so we can tally your contribution toward Wilmore Without Borders’ $5000 goal.
You may or may not have the opportunity or ability in your own life to assist immigrants directly–but Neighbors Immigration Clinic does, and we can help them do that! I hope you will join Wilmore Without Borders in supporting NIC through this fundraising effort. Shalom, Elizabeth — doggedinky@gmail.com
