Mayor Welcome
I welcome you to Wilmore, home to nearly 6,000 citizens. It was founded as a railroad town in 1876 with the building of the nearby historic High Bridge Railroad Bridge that spans the Kentucky River Gorge and its palisades. We have five National Register Historic Districts, a Village Green, our beautiful 32-acre Centennial Park and several neighborhood parks.
Wilmore is home to Asbury University and Asbury Theological Seminary, both of which add a cosmopolitan touch to our community with their worldwide connections.
The institutions maintain beautiful campuses and are known for their academic programs, which involve participation in the Olympics and an equine program praised by Kentucky’s horse industry, and advanced theological training with a global outreach.
In addition, we are home to the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, the first long-term care facility for Kentucky veterans in the state, Wesley Village — an exceptional state-of-the-art senior living community that’s second to none — and a host of other organizations, schools and churches are located in our town.
Wilmore is such a professional community with the influence of the two Asbury institutions of higher learning. Our population covers the full age spectrum, ranging from children to senior adults, and we have excellent day care centers, an outstanding elementary school and a beautiful community center for senior citizens, all within the city.
Our shops, restaurants and businesses offer services and goods with a gracious and warm hometown touch. We host several annual festivals and events throughout the year, which are always eagerly anticipated. Outstanding music is provided through the summer concert series of Stonebridge and Gospel on the Green, held on the Downtown Green. Wilmore is known regionally for its celebration of the Fourth of July and its Old Fashioned Musical Christmas.
A very successful juried fall arts-and-crafts festival is presented every October. Each November, we honor our veterans with a parade through town, ending at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.
Our community’s flowering trees, hanging floral baskets and flower beds are always a pleasure to see through the spring, summer and fall. A wide range of activities and cultural events such as art exhibits, music, drama and dance are available to citizens through Wilmore’s Parks and Recreation Department and in association with the many institutions organizations and churches in the community.
